Watchmen Movie Review
I’m just going to repost what I said in the forums….
I thought the movie was a great adaptation. The characters were fleshed out well and I thought I got a great feel of each. The actors they picked to portray each character seemed to work very well. Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan were both amazingly displayed. As Joe said seeing Dr. Manhattan on the big screen was rather satisfying. I never really liked his character in the novel but fell in love with him in the film. Rorschach was super creepy and I think he was spot on in the way he was played. Nite Owl’s character transition in the movie I thought was a little more “in your face” than the way the novel had him progress but it was totally bad ass so I thought it worked just as well. The Silk Spectre was nothing special really but that’s how I felt about her in the novel. She’s a fairly interesting character because of her interactions with the others but her alone I don’t care about. Lastly in the terms of characters I liked the Comedian and felt he was more of a bad ass in the movie. Ozymandias was ok I guess. I can’t really dive into what I want to say without spoiling stuff. Of course you can’t squeeze everything into a 3 hourish block but Snyder did a fantastic job of putting in what was truly important. The themes that were most important to the novel were there. As a fan of the novel, what was nixed didn’t bother me. I loved the fight sequences and thought that it was interesting to see the different fighting styles of the characters. I’m really looking forward to the dvd to see what else they had in store but had to cut. I also loved how they made a believable world. The opening credits show us the past leading up to the main story to the tune of The Times They Are A Changing by Bob Dylan and we see some interesting clips. Later characters make reference to the clips of the past. It really made me believe that this world could seriously function. I think my friend at the movie theater summed up pretty much how I felt in how he felt. He said that he thought it might have even been short (It was almost three hours and I’ve heard complaints of people thinking it was too long, so his statement says something.) because he wanted to see more of this world and story. I think if a movie wants you to see more of it than it is truly a good enjoyable film.
